ETrex Summit
Features Highlight and FAQ
1. Features Highlight
1.1 Elevation Profile
- Real time plot over time and distance (note 1)
- Zoom in/out profile (note 1)
- Review individual elevation points with time and date (note 1)
- Current ascent/descent rate
- Total ascent/descent
- Average ascent/descent rate
- Min/Max ascent/descent rate
- Min/Max elevation
- Local Pressure and 12 hours pressure trend
1.2 Sight 'N Go *
- Sight and locked in a bearing
- Navigate along course by following CDI with off course
information *
- Sight and project a waypoint, and navigate to it *
1.3 Track Log
- Automatic elevation and track logging (3000 points/hundreds of
miles)
- Save up to 10 tracks (along with elevation profile) with 500
points each
- Note: Clearing track log will also clear elevation profile
1.4 Options/Settings
- Option to show/hide waypoint
- Option to display heading using big numbers
- Option to set different units for distance/speed, elevation, and
pressure
- Options to turn on/off GPS and Compass
1.5 Others
- Automatic declination adjustment (all electronic compass need
manual adjustment) *
- Automatic map rotation (toward your heading)
- Create new waypoint by projecting from an existing waypoint
- All standard GPS features including marking a waypoint, tracing
a path etc
2. Electronic Compass FAQ
- Use outdoors, avoid concrete building, metal doors, power lines
etc
- Not tilt-compensated, need to hold level
- Automatic switch over to use GPS when exceeding 10mph
(Because it is difficult
to hold or mount compass level when moving fast) *
- Automatic switch back to use Compass when below 10mph for 90
seconds
(Does not switch back
immediately because you may be in a stop and go situation)
- Switch-over speed and switch-back time are configurable but
rarely needed
- You can Press and hold PAGE to activate Compass immediately
- Compass calibration is an easy 30-seconds process.
- Calibrate the Compass outdoors after a battery change.
3. Barometric Altimeter FAQ
- Automatically use GPS altitude to calibrate altimeter *
- Provide steady relative elevation changes once calibrated
- Most accurate when calibrated manually with known elevation or
barometric pressure
- Altimeter is temperature compensated
- Option to turn automatic calibration off
4 Regarding SA Off
- GPS, Compass and Altimeter combo is still very valuable even
with SA off
- You still have to walk a few steps before GPS can tell your
heading
- Much easier to orient yourself on map and know where to go, even
when standing still
- Retracing TracBack path with Compass is much better - you have
to try it to believe it *
- GPS altitude still fluctuate too much for elevation profile
recording
- Barometric altimeter provides steady and accurate elevation
change once calibrated
Note 1
These are features not found in even the most expensive standalone
altimeter
* These are
features only possible with the integration of GPS, Compass, and Altimeter.
